WAIMEA, Hawaii —Hapuna Beach was closed Wednesday after police reported a 60-year-old man was bitten by a shark, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
DLNR officials say the man was bitten on his left arm. Lifeguards are working to clear the water and shark warning signs will be posted.
We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
This is the second shark incident in Hawaii this year. In January, a man on Maui was bitten on his lower leg while trying to retrieve fishing gear from a shark had had caught and pulled ashore.
There were six shark incidents in 2014 -- all non-fatal. There were 112 shark incidents in the 35 years from 1980 through 2014. Only five of those incidents were fatal.
