Reza Aslan, a religious scholar-turned-CNN-host, sent a tweet calling the U.S. President Donald Trump a “piece of shit” in response to one of Trump’s tweets promoting his travel ban.
Aslan removed the message, but a screen shot is below.
His remarks came as Trump, in messages posted on Twitter minutes after the attack, criticized London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, and argued that the episode justified the president’s proposal to restrict travel to the U.S. by people from several predominantly Muslim countries.
Reza Aslan later apologized for the tweet, saying he should have “used better language to express my shock and frustration at the president’s lack of decorum and sympathy for the victims of London.”
Now CNN said that it had cut ties with Reza Aslan who was the host of the network’s weekly show “Believer.”
In a statement released to Variety on Friday, the network said:
“CNN has decided to not move forward with production on the acquired series ‘Believer with Reza Aslan,’ We wish Reza and his production team all the best.”
Aslan’s show, “Believer,” had been picked up for a second season, but that will no longer happen, according to AdWeek.
Reza Aslan, in a statement on Twitter, said he was “very disappointed” by the decision.
“In these politically charged times, the tenor of our nation’s discourse has become complicated, and I recognize that CNN needs to protect its brand as an unbiased news outlet,” Mr. Aslan wrote.
here is the Aslan's statement about the cancellation:
CNN’s split with Aslan comes a week after the network cut ties with Kathy Griffin, after she posted a photo showing her holding a prop designed to look like Trump’s bloodied, severed head.
